Powered by a 3.2GHz Core processor (which, Sony claim, gives twice the processing power of the Xbox 360), the PS3 will be backwards compatible with PS2 titles (as well as PSone games for all you retroheads), and will support Blu-Ray and SACD media discs. The console will feature a host of connectivity options, including three (count 'em) ethernet ports, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and even card readers for Memory Sticks and, more surprisingly, SD and CompactFlash cards.
Apparently trumping Microsoft at their own game, the PS3 will also be ready for the much-hyped high definition era. The PS3's graphics processor will support resolutions up to the ridiculously huge 1080p, much higher than the Xbox 360's stated support for 720p and 1080i. As for audio, the PS3 will pump out Dolby 5.1 channel sound.
The most exciting news, however, is that we really don't have that long to wait for the PS3. According to Ken "Mr. PlayStation" Kutaragi, the console will be released in the spring of 2006. Let's hope that we poor Europeans won't be left waiting again, as we are for the official PSP launch.
